"You Can't Buy That Kind of Publicity"

How great is it that the book world can get stirred up by the books that President Obama has in his shopping bag?  The New York Times reports that booksellers across the country were all atwitter after a staff member at a Martha's Vinyard bookstore tucked an ARC of Jonathan Franzen's long-awaited new book Freedom into his shopping bag.

Publisher FSG didn't mind a bit (but also declined to move the on-sale date up).

I don't think that incident made Fox News, though.

Hadn't heard that in the news. Thanks.

Suppose Obama gets his own talk show someday. Do you think Franzen would go on ... Obama, were he asked?

He'd be a fool not to this time.

David Ulin wrote a raving review of Freedom (did you catch it?) in last Sunday's LA Times, btw.
