The End is Near

Dave at BuzzFeed posted this one from a Borders in California (anyone know which store? I'd love to know). He doesn't know if it's funny or creepy. I think it's funny and sad. And maybe a little apocalyptic (which is how many of us are feeling at the moment, whether or not our stores are closing).

Wasn't there a post-apocalyptic movie recently, in which a couple of booksellers find themselves trapped in a bookstore? An indie somethin' somethin'?

It's extremely sad for me, though I adore the employee who did that and their black humour.

A local paper out here ran a column about the glory days of Borders. How back in the day on a Friday night Borders would be hoppin' with live music, hipsters hangin' out, and bookish geeky folk mingling w/the hipsters whom they'd normally not mingle with; how the stores brought sub-cultures together and how it stood in stark contrast to the PBS Performance Theatre-style fastidiousnes & snobbery of Barnes & Noble.

The story made me yearn for those carefree glory days. I'll see if I can find the article online for you ...
